The U.S. House of Representatives has rejected an amendment that sought to end U.S. security assistance to Israel. The vote however exposed growing divisions within the Democratic Party over Washington's support for Israel's military campaign in Gaza.

Lawmakers voted 314-104 against the proposal, introduced by Republican Representative Thomas Massie. The measure would have blocked the $3.3 billion in annual U.S. security assistance provided to Israel under a 2016 agreement.

While only one Republican backed the amendment, 103 Democrats voted in favour, marking a significant break from years of broad bipartisan support for Israel.

Massie, who opposes all foreign aid, said he also introduced the measure because of the civilian toll in Gaza.

Progressive Democrats have increasingly called for restricting or ending military aid to Israel, while party moderates argue support should continue, particularly for defensive systems.

The amendment faced little chance of becoming law even if it had passed the House, as it would also have needed Senate approval and was expected to face a veto from President Donald Trump, who has made support for Israel a key part of his foreign policy.

The vote comes as Israel's war in Gaza continues to reshape U.S. political debate, with the issue emerging as a growing point of contention within the Democratic Party ahead of the midterm elections.
