Siraj Haqqani met UAE President Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed in Abu Dhabi, discussing Afghanistan’s developments and strengthening bilateral ties.
On Tuesday, Siraj Haqqani, the interim interior minister of Afghanistan’s de facto authorities, met with the President of the UAE, Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan. According to the UAE’s state-run WAM news agency, the meeting took place at Qasr Al Shati in Abu Dhabi.
The two sides exchanged views on recent developments in Afghanistan and discussed strategies to enhance bilateral cooperation, with a particular focus on advancing mutual interests in development-related areas.
According to the Emirates News Agency, Siraj Haqqani expressed appreciation for the cooperation between the UAE and Afghanistan and praised the UAE’s humanitarian assistance to the Afghan people.
This marks Mr Haqqani’s second visit to the UAE. He is currently wanted by the FBI and has a $10 million bounty on his head from the US State Department. His previous visit took place on 5 June 2024, during which he also met with the President of the UAE.
Relations between Afghanistan’s de facto authorities and the UAE have improved notably. On 21 August last year, the UAE officially accepted the credentials of the ambassador appointed by Afghanistan’s de facto authorities.
Since the Taliban’s return to power in 2021, the UAE has emerged as a significant hub for international discussions involving Taliban representatives, including engagements with Western officials.
