Russian President Vladimir Putin has said the country is going through a “difficult period”, but has learned much from it, according to state news agency TASS.

Speaking at a conference of the ruling United Russia party on Sunday, Putin wished the party success in parliamentary elections due in September.

He did not give further details about the challenges facing the country. His comments come as Russia continues to face pressure from the war in Ukraine, Western sanctions and strains on parts of its economy.

September vote

The September vote will be Russia’s first State Duma election since Moscow launched its full-scale invasion of Ukraine in 2022. The State Duma is the lower house of Russia’s parliament.

United Russia remains the dominant political force in the country and has long been closely associated with Putin, although he is not formally its leader. The party holds a large majority in parliament and has strongly backed Kremlin policy.

Putin previously led United Russia and remains closely linked to its political image. His remarks are likely to be seen as an effort to rally support ahead of the election.
