At least 12 people were killed and nine others injured after gunmen opened fire in the Jumpers informal settlement in Cleveland, east of Johannesburg, late on Tuesday night (9 June).

Gauteng police said officers responded to reports of the shooting shortly after 23:10, finding 11 people dead at the scene, eight men and three women, while a 12th male victim later died in hospital. Several of the injured remain in critical condition.

Preliminary reports indicate that more than 10 suspects arrived in a white Toyota Quantum and entered the settlement from multiple points, carrying out a coordinated attack and opening fire on residents before fleeing in the same vehicle.

No arrests have been made and the motive remains unclear. Police said provincial detectives, crime intelligence and forensic teams are investigating, with a manhunt underway.
