Malawi declares state of emergency as drought leaves millions facing hunger

Malawi’s President Arthur Peter Mutharika has declared a state of emergency in 11 districts following severe drought conditions that have left millions at risk of hunger.

In a statement issued by Chief Secretary Justin Saidi, the president expressed “grave concern over the growing food insecurity caused by prolonged dry spells.” He appealed for urgent local and international assistance to support affected families.

According to the latest Food Situation Report by the Malawi Vulnerability Assessment Committee (MVAC), around four million people could face acute food shortages this year and into early 2026.

The affected districts span all four of Malawi’s administrative regions, with many communities already struggling due to failed harvests.

Experts say the current crisis has been worsened by recurring El Niño weather patterns over the past five years, which have repeatedly disrupted rainfall and reduced agricultural yields.

Authorities have urged humanitarian partners to respond swiftly as the country braces for worsening conditions in the coming months.
