The death toll from a train collision near Indonesia’s capital Jakarta rose to 14 women on Tuesday (28 April), with 84 people injured, after rescuers completed efforts to free passengers trapped in the wreckage, the state rail operator said.
The crash occurred late on Monday in Bekasi, east of Jakarta, involving a commuter train and a long‑distance service.
Mohammad Syafii, Head of Indonesia’s search and rescue agency, said the evacuation of people from the train was a delicate operation due to the extent of damage to the carriages.
“We needed to involve personnel with certain skills to perform a measured extrication,” he told reporters, adding that all trapped passengers had been recovered and that all those killed were women after a women‑only carriage bore the brunt of the impact.
Rail operator Indonesian Railway Limited Company (PT KAI) said the commuter train initially struck a taxi on the tracks before being hit by the long‑distance train.
President Prabowo Subianto, who visited victims in the hospital, ordered an investigation into the crash and acknowledged shortcomings in train-network maintenance.
Indonesia’s National Transportation Safety Committee is now probing the incident, as authorities work to restore services on one of Jakarta’s busiest commuter lines.
