Up to 50 migrants traveling by boat from West Africa to Spain are missing, according to migrant rights group Walking Borders.
Moroccan authorities rescued 36 people from a boat that left Mauritania on 2 January carrying 86 passengers, including 66 from Pakistan.
Walking Borders and NGO Alarm Phone had previously alerted authorities about the vessel, while Spain’s maritime rescue service stated it had no prior information on it.
Canary Islands' leader Fernando Clavijo called for increased efforts to address migration challenges, stating: “The Atlantic cannot continue to be the graveyard of Africa.”
Walking Borders CEO Helena Maleno said many passengers had endured 13 days at sea before being rescued.
