Russian President Vladimir Putin and Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian will meet in Russia on January 17 to sign a comprehensive strategic partnership agreement, discussing enhanced cooperation in trade, transport, and humanitarian efforts, alongside regional and international issues.

Russian President Vladimir Putin and Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian are set to hold discussions in Russia on 17 January, during which they will formalise a long-anticipated comprehensive strategic partnership agreement, the Kremlin announced on Monday.

The talks will explore avenues for deepening bilateral cooperation across various sectors, including trade, investment, transport, logistics, and humanitarian initiatives. Regional and international matters will also feature prominently on the agenda, the Kremlin confirmed.

The meeting underscores Moscow's efforts to strengthen ties with Tehran and other states critical of the United States, such as North Korea, particularly in the aftermath of the Ukraine conflict.

In October, Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov revealed plans for the strategic partnership agreement, emphasising enhanced defence collaboration as a key element.

The United States, meanwhile, accused Iran in September of supplying short-range ballistic missiles to Russia for use in Ukraine, subsequently imposing sanctions on vessels and companies allegedly involved in the transfer of Iranian weaponry. Tehran has categorically denied providing missiles to Moscow.
