Italy has reopened its embassy in Damascus after 12 years, with Foreign Minister Antonio Tajani emphasizing support for the Syrian people and plans to boost economic cooperation during his visit.
The Italian flag was raised at the reopened Italian embassy in Damascus on Friday, January 10, marking the end of a 12-year closure.
Italian Foreign Minister Antonio Tajani, who is visiting Syria, attended the opening ceremony and reaffirmed Italy’s commitment to supporting the Syrian people. “Italy is ready to do its part to promote the reform process in Syria,” Tajani said during a press conference following his meeting with Ahmed al-Sharaa, leader of Syria’s new administration. “We have the ambassador here, and we want to be close to the Syrian people and support them in all sectors.”
Tajani also emphasized Italy’s plans to relaunch economic cooperation in key industries. “We want to be a bridge in the new Syria and the EU,” he added.
During his visit, Tajani met with Syria’s de facto ruler, Ahmed al-Sharaa, and Foreign Minister Asaad Hassan al-Shibani. Earlier on Friday, he visited Damascus’ historic Umayyad Mosque.
