Storm Kristin has killed at least three people and left more than 800,000 residents without electricity across central and northern Portugal, as violent winds, heavy rain and snowfall battered the country before moving into Spain.

Emergency services said one person was killed when a tree fell onto a car in Vila Franca de Xira, on the outskirts of Lisbon. Two more fatalities were reported in the central district of Leiria, one of the areas worst affected by the storm, according to local authorities.

Civil protection officials said they recorded more than 3,000 weather-related incidents, including fallen trees, damaged buildings and blocked roads, after wind gusts reached speeds of up to 150 kilometres per hour.

In Leiria, residents described roofs being torn apart and rain pouring into homes as tiles and metal sheets were ripped away by the wind. Firefighters were seen helping residents salvage belongings from debris-strewn streets, while technicians prepared to assess the structural safety of damaged buildings.

Warehouses, homes and public structures were left heavily damaged in several towns, while in coastal areas infrastructure including a Ferris wheel and food stands was destroyed by the storm.

Rail and road traffic were disrupted across large parts of the country, with fallen trees and debris forcing temporary closures.

After sweeping through Portugal, Storm Kristin moved east into Spain, which is still recovering from the impact of Storm Joseph earlier this week. In the coastal town of Torremolinos, strong winds toppled a palm tree on Tuesday, killing a woman.

Authorities urged residents to remain cautious as cleanup operations continue and warned that further disruptions could follow as emergency crews work to restore power and clear damaged infrastructure.
