The United States will send its largest-ever Winter Olympic team to the Milano Cortina Games, with 232 athletes selected to compete, the U.S. Olympic and Paralympic Committee said on Monday.
The roster includes 115 women and 117 men, surpassing the previous U.S. Winter Games record of 228 athletes at Pyeongchang in 2018.
A group of 98 veteran Olympians will anchor the team, including alpine skier Mikaela Shiffrin and snowboarder Chloe Kim, both two-time Olympic gold medallists.
Canadian-born monobob champion Kaillie Humphries, who switched allegiance to the United States ahead of the 2022 Games, is the most decorated athlete on the team with three Olympic gold medals.
Bobsleigh athlete Elana Meyers Taylor has the largest overall medal haul, with three silvers and two bronzes earned across four previous Olympic appearances.
Six other four-time Olympians are also included in the squad: Humphries, figure skater Evan Bates, snowboarders Nick Baumgartner and Faye Thelen, ice hockey player Hilary Knight and alpine skier Lindsey Vonn.
Rocky Harris, chief of sport and athlete services at the U.S. Olympic and Paralympic Committee, said the organisation has invested heavily in winter sport programmes.
“We have a lot of confidence in the 2026 team because our winter sport programmes have made significant progress over the quad,” Harris told reporters. “We made an intentional effort to focus on winter sports.”
About Milano Cortina 2026
The Milano Cortina 2026 Winter Olympics will take place from 6 to 22 February 2026 and will be hosted by Italy.
Events will be staged across several northern Italian locations, including Milan, Cortina d’Ampezzo, Bormio, Livigno, Predazzo, Tesero and Antholz-Anterselva, using a mix of existing and upgraded venues.
The Olympic Winter Games will be followed by the Milano Cortina 2026 Paralympic Winter Games, which will run from 6 to 15 March and mark the 50th anniversary of the Winter Paralympics, organisers and the International Paralympic Committee said.
More than 650 athletes are expected to compete in 79 Paralympic medal events across six sports: para Alpine skiing, para biathlon, para cross-country skiing, para ice hockey, para snowboard and wheelchair curling.
The Paralympic opening ceremony will be held at the historic Verona Arena, with the closing ceremony scheduled at the Cortina Curling Olympic Stadium.
Organisers said accessibility upgrades made for the Games — including improvements to public spaces, transport systems and sporting venues — are intended to leave a long-term legacy for people with disabilities across the host regions.
