Former U.S. President Jimmy Carter was honored with a state funeral at Washington's National Cathedral, where hundreds of mourners, including all five living current and former presidents, gathered to pay their respects.
Carter's flag-draped coffin was carried into the cathedral by a military honor guard. President Joe Biden delivered the eulogy, emphasizing Carter’s lasting legacy with the words: "character, character, character."
The ceremonies in Washington followed initial tributes in Carter’s home state of Georgia. His casket traveled through his hometown of Plains, where well-wishers lined the roads, and then to the State Capitol in Atlanta and the Carter Presidential Library, where it lay in repose for public mourning.
James Carter, the late president's second son, paid tribute to both his father and his mother, Rosalynn, reflecting on their shared impact on the world.
Carter, who served as the 39th U.S. president from 1977 to 1981, passed away in December at the age of 100. His family has requested donations to the Carter Center in lieu of flowers, supporting its mission in global health, peace, and human rights.
Carter will be laid to rest in a private ceremony in Georgia after his body is returned from Washington.
