Türkiye is closely monitoring developments in Syria and considers the country’s unity and territorial integrity vital for regional stability, President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan told President Donald Trump during a phone call on Tuesday, according to Türkiye’s Communications Directorate.
During the call, the two leaders discussed bilateral relations as well as regional and global issues.
Erdoğan said Ankara is following the situation in Syria “closely” and stressed that Syria’s unity, solidarity and territorial integrity are of key importance for Türkiye. The leaders also exchanged views on the fight against ISIS and the status of ISIS members held in Syrian prisons.
Erdoğan said a peaceful Syria, free from terrorism and developing in all areas, would contribute to broader regional stability.
Trump said on Tuesday he had a “very good call” with Turkish President. He made the remarks before boarding the Marine One helicopter at the White House en route to Joint Base Andrews, as he departed for the World Economic Forum in Davos.
The conversation also covered the situation in Gaza. Erdoğan said efforts to establish peace are continuing and that Türkiye will keep acting in coordination with the United States.
He thanked Trump for the invitation to join the newly announced Board of Peace for Gaza. On Tuesday, Türkiye's foreign minister said that Erdoğan will decide whether to join President Trump's Board of Peace initiative soon.
"We have received an invitation. Our President is being invited as a founding member, on behalf of Türkiye (and) will likely make his decision on this matter very soon," Hakan Fidan said in an interview with state media.
Earlier on Tuesday, Trump said he would hold a ‘very important’ call with Erdoğan. The White House has said the board will help oversee the implementation of Trump’s plan to end the war in Gaza, support reconstruction and guide the territory’s transition from conflict to peace. Trump has invited additional leaders, including Erdoğan, to take part.
