The European Union has called an emergency meeting of its ambassadors after U.S. President Donald Trump vowed to impose escalating tariffs on European allies unless the United States is allowed to buy Greenland.

Ambassadors from the EU’s 27 member states will convene on Sunday, following Trump’s announcement that trade measures would be used to pressure European countries over the future of the Danish Arctic territory.

Cyprus, which currently holds the EU’s six-month rotating presidency, said late on Saturday that it had requested the emergency meeting. EU diplomats said the talks are scheduled to begin at 5 p.m. (1600 GMT).

Trump said earlier this week that he would impose a wave of increasing tariffs on European allies until Washington is permitted to purchase Greenland, an autonomous territory of Denmark.

The move has raised concerns among EU officials about the potential escalation of trade tensions and broader implications for transatlantic relations.
