Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has raised concerns that Russia could launch large-scale attacks during the Christmas period.

He said Ukraine is negotiating with the United States to acquire multiple Patriot air defence systems to strengthen protection for civilians.

Zelenskyy told reporters that intelligence indicates a heightened risk over 23–25 December, prompting him to instruct Ukrainian intelligence agencies to increase monitoring. He also noted that proposals from Germany and the US for a holiday ceasefire had been rejected by Russia.

The president described air defence as a critical priority, acknowledging a current shortage of systems. He said Ukraine is working to finalise an agreement with the U.S. for several dozen Patriot units through various programmes.

Zelenskyy added that Kyiv would respond appropriately if Russia does not engage seriously in talks aimed at ending the nearly four-year conflict. He reported that Russian forces have stepped up attacks in recent weeks, resulting in increased Russian casualties.

During a meeting of the Supreme Commander-in-Chief’s staff, the president reviewed recent Ukrainian strikes, the supply needs of the defence forces, and air defence coverage along the front lines and in regions such as Odesa. He also mentioned that candidates for the role of commander of the Air Command South had been proposed, with decisions pending.

Separately, Russian authorities reported that a car bomb in southern Moscow killed Lieutenant General Fanil Sarvarov, who oversaw operational training at the Russian General Staff. Ukraine has not commented on the incident.
