At least 10 people have been killed and 10 wounded after gunmen opened fire at a bar in a township west of Johannesburg, police said on Sunday, in the second mass shooting in South Africa this month.
The attack happened overnight at the KwaNoxolo tavern in the Tambo section of Bekkersdal, according to the South African Broadcasting Corporation (SABC). Witnesses quoted by SABC News said unidentified assailants fired randomly at patrons inside the venue and at people gathered outside.
Emergency services took the injured to nearby hospitals, where they are receiving treatment. Police confirmed 10 fatalities and said officers remained at the scene as forensic examinations and inquiries continued.
Fred Kekana, the acting police commissioner for Gauteng, said several specialised units had been deployed, including national and provincial crime scene teams, serious crime investigators, crime intelligence officers and local detectives.
Police have not released any details about suspects or a possible motive. The investigation is ongoing.
