Lithuania’s Vilnius airport temporarily halted operations due to suspected balloons in its airspace, the airport said on Sunday, marking the latest in a series of flight disruptions in the Baltic nation.

European aviation has faced repeated disruption in recent months due to drone sightings and airspace incursions, including in Copenhagen and Brussels.

Vilnius airport has been forced to close at least 10 times since early October.

Lithuania says weather balloons flown by smugglers are being used to transport contraband cigarettes across the border and accuses Belarus President Alexander Lukashenko of allowing the practice, describing it as a form of “hybrid attack”.

In response, Lithuania closed both of its Belarus border crossings in October but reopened them last week after airspace interruptions appeared to ease.

Lukashenko has dismissed the closures as a “crazy scam”, accusing the West of waging a hybrid war against Belarus and Russia and pushing Europe into a new era of barbed-wire divisions.
