Shumeet Banerji, a member of the BBC’s board, has resigned, citing “governance issues” at the broadcaster.

In a letter, Banerji said he was “not consulted” on the events leading up to the recent departures of Director-General Tim Davie and BBC News Chief Executive Deborah Turness.

His resignation follows growing concerns over the BBC board’s oversight and strategy, with Banerji directly criticising Chairman Samir Shah and other board members.

Davie and Turness stepped down in early November after accusations that a documentary aired last year had edited a speech by former U.S. President Donald Trump in a misleading way. The Panorama programme reportedly stitched together two parts of Trump’s speech, making it appear as if he explicitly encouraged the January 2021 Capitol riots.

Trump has threatened a $1 billion lawsuit against the BBC, despite the broadcaster’s apology. Speaking to Fox News, he said: “I think I have an obligation to do it… They defrauded the public and they’ve admitted it. This is within one of our great allies, supposedly our great ally.”
