Torrential rain battered New York on Thursday, leaving two people dead, Mayor Eric Adams confirmed, as severe storms disrupted flights and prompted flood warnings across parts of the city.
Local media reported extensive flooding and damage, while operations at JFK, LaGuardia and Newark airports were severely affected.
Adams said on X that the storm “broke rainfall records for October 30,” noting that most of the expected downpour fell within just ten minutes in the afternoon.
According to the National Weather Service, Central Park saw a record 1.85 inches (4.7 cm) of rain, while LaGuardia and Newark airports recorded 2.09 inches (5.31 cm) and 1.99 inches (5.05 cm) respectively. Coastal flood warnings were also issued for parts of the Bronx, Brooklyn, and Queens.
