The Israeli navy has ordered the Gaza-bound Global Sumud Flotilla to change course toward Ashdod port, offering a safe channel to deliver humanitarian aid.
A video released by the Israeli Foreign Ministry shows an unidentified navy member on the phone with the flotilla, saying: “This is the Israeli navy. You are approaching a blockaded zone. If you wish to deliver aid to Gaza, you may do so through the established channels. Please change your course toward the port of Ashdod where the aid will undergo a security inspection and then be transferred into the Gaza Strip.”
The statement from the Israeli Foreign Ministry on Wednesday said the flotilla was entering an active combat zone and violating a lawful naval blockade. The ministry reiterated that any aid could be safely delivered through established channels.
Activists aboard the flotilla had posted videos claiming they were intercepted by Israeli forces. American activist David Adler said in a pre-recorded video, “If you’re watching this, it means I have been violently intercepted by Israeli authorities against my will,” urging political groups and unions to mobilize against Israel’s actions.
Reporter Kieran Andrieu of Novara Media also posted a video claiming he had been detained. Several flotilla boats, including those carrying French politician Marie Mesmeur and Franco-Palestinian MEP Rima Hassan, were surrounded.
The flotilla, with nearly 500 activists on 50 boats including Greta Thunberg and Mandla Mandela was attempting to breach Israel’s maritime blockade with symbolic humanitarian aid. European governments, including Spain and Italy, had advised the participants to avoid confrontation. Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez emphasized that the mission was humanitarian and posed no threat to Israel.
