Guyana’s President Irfaan Ali was sworn in on Sunday for a second term, following his victory in last week’s elections that cemented his party’s majority in parliament.

The electoral commission confirmed the win on Saturday, giving Ali’s People’s Progressive Party 36 of 65 seats.

Guyana, rich in offshore oil and gas, has seen rapid economic growth since vast reserves were discovered a decade ago.

In his inauguration speech, Ali, 45, pledged unity and promised to expand development projects while continuing social programmes funded by oil revenues. His government plans to offer free university tuition, increase pensions and cut energy costs.

The U.S. State Department congratulated Ali, saying it looked forward to working with his administration to strengthen energy security and support Guyana’s sovereignty.
