Russia detains suspect in bomb attack that killed top general Igor Kirillov; Ukraine's intelligence accused of orchestrating the assassination.
Russia announced on Wednesday that it had detained a citizen of Uzbekistan who confessed to planting a bomb that killed Lieutenant General Igor Kirillov in Moscow the day before.
Kirillov, head of Russia's Nuclear, Biological, and Chemical Protection Troops, died when a bomb hidden in an electric scooter exploded outside his apartment, also killing his assistant.
The Ukrainian SBU intelligence service took responsibility for the assassination, accusing Kirillov of using chemical weapons against Ukrainian troops, which Russia denies.
The suspect claimed in a video that he carried out the bombing on orders from Ukraine's intelligence services, receiving a remote-detonated device and $100,000 for the job. He said he had planted the bomb outside Kirillov’s building after conducting surveillance and was offered European residency.
Russia’s Investigative Committee is looking into other potential suspects.
