A 6.1 magnitude earthquake struck Türkiye on Sunday at a depth of 10 kilometres, according to the German Research Centre for Geosciences (GFZ).

Türkiye was shaken late Sunday by a powerful 6.1 magnitude earthquake centred in the Sındırgı district of Balıkesir province, according to the Disaster and Emergency Management Agency (AFAD). The tremor occurred at a depth of 11 kilometres.

Interior Minister Ali Yerlikaya confirmed that an 81-year-old citizen died after being rescued from a collapsed building. Twenty-nine others were injured, though none are reported to be in life-threatening condition.

Initial assessments show that 16 buildings in 68 neighbourhoods collapsed due to the earthquake and its aftershocks.

President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan offered condolences to those affected and said he would closely follow recovery efforts.
