India and Russia reaffirmed their strategic partnership just a day after the U.S. imposed steep tariffs on Indian goods over its continued oil trade with Moscow.

Indian National Security Adviser Ajit Doval met with Russia’s Security Council Secretary Sergei Shoigu, where both leaders emphasized the value of their bilateral cooperation.

"We are committed to further active cooperation in order to form a new, more just and sustainable world order, ensure the supremacy of international law, and jointly combat modern challenges and threats," Shoigu told Doval in televised comments.

Shoigu highlighted their mutual goal of shaping a fairer global order, while Doval confirmed expectations for President Vladimir Putin’s visit to India later this year.

The discussions took place shortly after U.S. President Donald Trump announced a 25% tariff increase on Indian imports, citing India’s ongoing purchases of Russian oil.

This move, which takes effect 28 August and raises total tariffs to 50%, marks a sharp shift in U.S.-India relations.

Doval's visit also includes talks on Russian crude imports and India’s long-standing defense partnership with Moscow.

Notably, India signed a $5.5 billion deal for Russian S-400 missile systems in 2018, but final deliveries are now expected in 2026–2027.

While India has diversified its arms sources, Russia remains a critical partner in its defence strategy.
