At least 27 people have been injured after three cars of a passenger train derailed near Lahore in eastern Pakistan on Friday, officials said.

The Islamabad Express was heading to Lahore when it went off the tracks in the town of Kala Shah Kaku, according to railway spokesperson Babar Raza.

Emergency teams responded quickly and all injured passengers, including women and children, are in stable condition. An investigation has been launched to determine the cause of the derailment.

Train accidents are common in Pakistan due to chronic underinvestment, ageing infrastructure and outdated signalling systems. In 2023, a derailment in Nawabshah killed more than 30 people.
