A landmark agreement has been signed for the export of 48 KAAN fighter jets – Türkiye’s indigenously developed National Combat Aircraft – to Indonesia.
The deal is considered the largest defence export agreement in Türkiye’s history.
The signing ceremony took place at IDEF 2025 – the International Defence Industry Fair – in Istanbul. Attendees included officials from the Turkish Presidency of Defence Industries (SSB), Turkish Aerospace Industries (TUSAŞ), and Indonesia’s Ministry of Defence.
The agreement was signed by Haluk Görgün, Head of SSB; Indonesia’s Defence Minister Sjafrie Sjamsoeddin; and senior executives from TUSAŞ and Indonesian partner companies.
In his remarks, Haluk Görgün stated that the deal represents more than just a sale – it marks the beginning of a long-term strategic partnership between the two nations. According to Görgün, TUSAŞ and Indonesia’s partner companies will engage in joint production and technology transfer:
“Our aim is not only to sell aircraft, but also to strengthen local capabilities, develop new technologies, and establish a model of collaborative development.”
The agreement also stands as the first international contract involving the fifth-generation KAAN fighter jet.
Other significant deals were also signed during IDEF 2025. TUSAŞ announced that Türkiye’s TAIS shipyard will produce a warship (frigate) for Indonesia as part of another agreement. Major Turkish defence firms including ASELSAN, ROKETSAN, HAVELSAN, and TÜBİTAK will also contribute to the project.
Görgün further noted that negotiations are ongoing with other countries regarding KAAN sales, and new agreements are expected to be announced in the near future
