Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese began his visit to China on Saturday by arriving in Shanghai with a large business delegation, highlighting the importance of economic relations between the two countries.

On Sunday, Albanese met with Shanghai Party Secretary Chen Jining, marking the first in a series of high-level meetings scheduled for the trip. He is also expected to meet Chinese President Xi Jinping, Premier Li Qiang, and National People’s Congress Chairman Zhao Leji later in the week.

During the weeklong visit, Albanese will engage with representatives from business, tourism, and sports sectors in Shanghai and Chengdu. A CEO roundtable is planned for Tuesday in Beijing.

One key event during the trip was the signing of an agreement between Tourism Australia and Chinese online travel company Trip.com, aimed at increasing Chinese tourism to Australia.

This is Albanese’s second visit to China since his Labor Party came to power in 2022. The party secured a larger majority in the recent May elections.
