Germany and the UK will sign a new 'friendship treaty' next week to deepen cooperation on foreign policy, security, and economic ties amid global challenges.

Chancellor Friedrich Merz is scheduled to visit London next Thursday, where the landmark treaty will be signed, a deputy government spokesman announced.

"The friendship treaty will focus on foreign and security policy cooperation, economic growth, and strengthening citizen-to-citizen connections," said German government spokesperson Steffen Meyer, without providing further details.

Chancellor Merz, who took office in May, will meet with British Prime Minister Keir Starmer during his visit.

Merz has consistently highlighted the importance of closer ties with major European partners, both inside and outside the EU, to better respond to rising geopolitical tensions and global uncertainty.
