A state of emergency has been declared in parts of Crete’s Ierapetra region after a destructive wildfire scorched farmland, forced evacuations, and damaged infrastructure.

Authorities in Greece declared a state of emergency on Friday in areas around Ierapetra, eastern Crete, following a major wildfire that erupted on Wednesday. Fueled by dry and windy conditions, the fire devastated thousands of acres of farmland and forest along the island’s southern coast.

More than 1,000 residents and tourists were evacuated, and critical infrastructure, including water supply systems—suffered heavy damage.

The emergency status will remain in place until 2 October to support recovery and relief operations. Meanwhile, an arson investigation team has arrived to examine the fire’s origins, as its rapid spread and multiple ignition points have raised suspicions of foul play.
