Russia has officially become the first country to recognise the Taliban government in Afghanistan, marking a significant shift in diplomatic relations.
Russian President Vladimir Putin’s Special Representative for Afghanistan, Zamir Kabulov, announced that Russia has formally recognised the Afghan administration established after the change of power on 15 August 2021.
Kabulov did not provide further details on the scope or conditions of Moscow’s recognition.
Meanwhile, the Russian Foreign Ministry said in a written statement that Deputy Foreign Minister Andrey Rudenko met with Gul Hasan, Afghanistan's newly appointed ambassador to Moscow.
