A homemade bomb carried by a woman exploded near an upscale restaurant in central Moscow on Saturday (1 August) evening, killing three people and injuring at least 21 others, Russian authorities said.
The blast occurred shortly before 8 p.m. local time outside the Balzi Rossi Italian restaurant at Kudrinskaya Square, one of Moscow's landmark Stalin-era skyscrapers.
Russia's Anti-Terrorism Committee said the woman carrying the device attempted to enter the restaurant but was stopped by a security guard. Moments later, the explosive detonated.
The woman, the security guard and a restaurant customer were killed in the blast, according to state news agency RIA. Police said the injured suffered wounds of varying severity.
Russian authorities have not identified the victims or said who they believe was responsible for the attack.
Video released by RIA showed heavily armed law enforcement officers securing the area, which was cordoned off following the explosion.
The Kommersant newspaper, citing unnamed sources, reported that investigators believe the bomb was intended to kill or injure guests gathered on the restaurant's outdoor terrace during a private event.
The newspaper also reported that the device may have been detonated remotely and that the woman carrying it may not have known she was transporting an explosive. Reuters could not independently verify the report.
The explosion comes more than four years after Russia's full-scale invasion of Ukraine, amid heightened security concerns over attacks inside Russia.
Earlier this year, Russia's Federal Security Service (FSB) said it would strengthen protection for senior military officials following a series of assassinations and attempted attacks that Moscow blamed on Kyiv.
Authorities have not indicated whether Saturday's explosion is linked to the conflict, and the investigation remains ongoing.
