Thousands of demonstrators gathered across Spain's Canary Islands, urging authorities to address overtourism and its impact on local communities, including rising housing costs, congestion, and strained services.
Marching under the slogan "Canaries have a limit," demonstrators also highlighted concerns about the strain on water resources.
More than a million foreign tourists visit the Canary Islands monthly, far exceeding the islands' 2.2 million residents. Protesters argue this influx has led to skyrocketing housing prices, traffic congestion, and limited access to health services during peak seasons.
Similar protests have occurred in other Spanish tourist hubs like Mallorca and Barcelona. Canary Island officials are now seeking EU funds to address housing shortages in the region’s outermost areas.
