Uzbekistan's region of Karakalpakstan is developing three cryptocurrency mining facilities and three data centers with a combined investment of $5.1 billion, as the region seeks to attract larger and higher-quality investments.
The projects are being implemented after the entire territory was designated as a mining zone under a special government decision.
Speaking at a ceremony attended by President Shavkat Mirziyoyev, the Chairman of the region's legislative authority, Amanbay Orynbaev, said the new status allows the region to focus more closely on the quality of both investors and investment projects.
Karakalpakstan is also attracting major investment into renewable energy.
A $3.3 billion wind power project is being developed in the region together with Saudi Arabia-based ACWA Power. Another project, the $260 million Nukus-2 wind farm, was commissioned as part of the latest wave of new facilities. Last year, the region also launched the $107 million Nukus Wind project.
The development of renewable generation is particularly relevant to the region’s expanding digital infrastructure, including energy-intensive mining operations and data centers.
According to Orynbaev, the number of entrepreneurs operating in Karakalpakstan has increased 2.5 times over the past decade, while the volume of foreign investment has grown 500-fold.
He said the region had previously focused primarily on attracting any available investment, but its priorities are now shifting toward projects that can bring greater economic value.
President Mirziyoyev, commenting on the regional developments, said the results achieved in Karakalpakstan correspond to the region’s potential, noting that reaching them required determination and perseverance.
The latest projects add to Karakalpakstan’s efforts to develop new sources of economic growth through digital infrastructure, renewable energy and private investment.
