Chipmaker Nvidia will invest up to $100 billion in ChatGPT owner OpenAI and provide it with data centre chips, the companies announced Monday, forming a major partnership in the global artificial intelligence race.
The deal includes two linked transactions: OpenAI will pay Nvidia in cash for chips, while Nvidia will acquire non-controlling shares in OpenAI. The first $10 billion of Nvidia’s investment will begin once OpenAI finalises its purchase of Nvidia systems.
The companies signed a letter of intent to deploy at least 10 gigawatts of Nvidia chips for OpenAI’s AI infrastructure, with the first gigawatt scheduled for deployment in the second half of 2026 on Nvidia’s Vera Rubin platform.
OpenAI CEO Sam Altman said: “Compute infrastructure will be the basis for the economy of the future, and we will utilise what we’re building with Nvidia to both create new AI breakthroughs and empower people and businesses with them at scale.”
Nvidia shares rose as much as 4.4% following the announcement. The investment comes days after Nvidia committed $5 billion to Intel and follows a $6.6 billion funding round for OpenAI in October 2024.
