Russia's Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov and his Turkish counterpart Hakan Fidan have discussed the Kremlin's proposal to hold direct talks between Russia and Ukraine this week in Turkey. This was reported by the Russian Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
The ministry's statement notes that the ministers exchanged views on President Vladimir Putin's initiative to start direct talks on a political settlement of the Ukrainian conflict in Istanbul on May 15.
The Turkish side confirmed the conversation took place, but no further details were provided.
It is worth recalling that Putin put forward this proposal after European leaders visited Kyiv and urged Russia to agree to a 30-day ceasefire. European officials warned that new sanctions would be imposed on Moscow if it did not comply.
