On May 3, President of Azerbaijan Ilham Aliyev and First Lady Mehriban Aliyeva met with Patriarch Kirill of Moscow and All Russia, who is visiting Baku.
President Aliyev welcomed the Patriarch and highly valued his visit to Azerbaijan. He noted that the traditional mutual respect, sympathy, and support between the peoples continue today and serve as a solid foundation for intergovernmental relations. The President emphasized that interfaith and interethnic peace and understanding prevail in Azerbaijan, with the Orthodox community playing a significant role in this harmony.
"The Orthodox community actively participates in the development of our country and contributes to the preservation of Azerbaijan’s sovereignty and territorial integrity," the head of state said.
In his remarks, Patriarch Kirill expressed his pleasure in visiting Azerbaijan again. He praised the personal sincerity of President Ilham Aliyev and First Lady Mehriban Aliyeva and commended the environment of mutual respect and friendship in the country.
Patriarch Kirill also conveyed warm greetings from Russian President Vladimir Putin and extended an invitation to President Aliyev to visit Moscow for the celebration of the 80th anniversary of Victory.
During the meeting, Patriarch Kirill presented the First Class Order of Saint Princess Olga of the Russian Orthodox Church to First Vice President of Azerbaijan and President of the Heydar Aliyev Foundation, Mehriban Aliyeva. She was awarded the order for her contributions to the preservation of traditional values and the promotion of intercultural and interfaith dialogue.
The meeting concluded with an exchange of gifts.
