Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan said Türkiye welcomes US President Donald Trump’s approach that respects its national sensitivities, particularly on the Syria issue, adding that both leaders share mutual understanding.
Speaking to reporters on Wednesday following his return from Italy, President Erdogan stated: “I believe my friend Trump and I will bring very different momentum to US-Türkiye relations in days to come.” He confirmed plans for a face-to-face meeting with Trump at the earliest opportunity, describing their recent phone call as “cordial, productive, and friendly.”
Erdogan also commented on regional developments, calling Israeli strikes on Syrian territory an attempt to disrupt the positive climate emerging with Syria’s new government. He dismissed ideas of a federal system in Syria, labeling it a “pipe dream” with no basis in the country's reality.
Regarding Türkiye’s ties with Italy, Erdogan highlighted growing collaboration in sectors beyond defense, including aviation and space technology. He emphasized that reciprocal technology transfers will help boost Türkiye’s domestic defense industry while opening new opportunities for Italy.
