The protest on Melikishvili Avenue has been temporarily paused following a decision by opposition leaders. The announcement was made to rally participants by key figures from opposition parties.
Zurab Girchi Japaridze, leader of the "Coalition for Change," urged attendees to regroup and conserve their energy. "We need to rethink our strategy and come up with something different from what we have been doing here," he stated.
Japaridze explained that the opposition parties would soon unveil a revised action plan. He noted that the government’s altered approach—allowing the blocking of Melikishvili Avenue without intervention—had rendered the current protest ineffective. This led organizers to halt the demonstration, encourage participants to rest, and focus on planning a new course of action. Japaridze assured that the protests would continue, with a fresh rally likely to be held tomorrow.
The shift to Melikishvili Avenue came after law enforcement cleared demonstrators from their previous location near the first building of Tbilisi State University early this morning. Protesters had occupied the area on Chavchavadze Avenue for three consecutive nights before being evicted by police at 6 a.m.
During the operation, officers dismantled tents set up in front of the university and reopened Chavchavadze Avenue to traffic. Traffic flow has now also resumed on Melikishvili Avenue.
