President Ilham Aliyev of Azerbaijan received Kazakhstan’s Prime Minister Olzhas Bektenov today in a meeting that underscored the deepening bilateral relations between the two nations.
The discussions focused on implementing key agreements, expanding economic cooperation, and enhancing regional connectivity, building on recent collaborative efforts, including the successful COP29 hosted in Azerbaijan last year.
During the meeting, President Aliyev lauded the dynamic development of ties between Azerbaijan and Kazakhstan, recalling his regular meetings with President Kassym-Jomart Tokayev. He expressed gratitude for Kazakhstan’s participation in COP29, noting that the event not only marked a milestone in environmental diplomacy but also fostered several important initiatives to further strengthen bilateral bonds.
“Several important issues were agreed upon at COP29, and projects fostering closer ties were formulated,” President Aliyev stated. He emphasized that the peoples of Azerbaijan and Kazakhstan have long-standing, brotherly relations and highlighted the mutual commitment of both countries to achieving strong socio-economic growth and playing influential roles on the international stage.
Prime Minister Bektenov conveyed greetings from President Tokayev and reaffirmed that the trust-based relationship between the leaders of Azerbaijan and Kazakhstan has been a cornerstone of their growing partnership. He noted significant progress in implementing agreements, particularly in the development of the Trans-Caspian multimodal transport route, which saw a 60 percent increase in cargo flow last year. Bektenov also emphasized ongoing efforts to expand transportation along established corridors and to boost joint projects in the oil and gas sector, including prospects for increasing the volume of Kazakh oil transported via the Baku-Tbilisi-Ceyhan pipeline.
The two leaders discussed support for investment projects facilitated through a joint investment fund and highlighted the integration of their energy systems. A key point of discussion was the underwater cable line, signed during COP29, which aims to enhance energy cooperation and bolster development in the green energy sector.
