Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev was formally welcomed in Astana on Tuesday during an official ceremony at Kazakhstan’s presidential palace.
The ceremony took place at the Akorda Presidential Palace, where a guard of honour was assembled in honour of President Aliyev’s visit.
Kazakh President Kassym-Jomart Tokayev greeted his Azerbaijani counterpart on arrival. The two leaders then introduced members of their respective delegations.
The official welcome included a report to President Aliyev by the commander of the honour guard and the playing of both national anthems.
The two heads of state walked past the guard of honour before posing for a joint photograph.
Aliyev’s visit is part of wider efforts to strengthen bilateral ties between Azerbaijan and Kazakhstan, particularly in the areas of trade, energy and transport. Further meetings were expected later on Tuesday.
