Armenia’s Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan has said he hopes the country will have visa-free travel with the European Union (EU) by 2029, the country’s state news agency Armenpress has reported.

Speaking at a panel discussion in Yerevan held by Armenian youth NGO the Restart Foundation, Pashinyan said he wanted to offer young people an Armenia within its internationally recognised borders and with visa liberalisation.

“The Republic of Armenia with its internationally recognised territory and open borders — figuratively speaking, that is the condition in which I must hand the country over to young people,” he said.

“Particularly now, considering that we are deepening our relations with the European Union, I hope that by 2029 we will already have secured a decision on visa liberalisation with the EU.”

Pashinyan added that a “peaceful country with open borders” would remove all obstacles to young people achieving their goals and ambitions.

On Tuesday (3 November), Pashinyan told Euronews that Armenia could formally apply to join the EU in 2027 or 2028, describing the dates as “realistic.”

In August, Pashinyan told Armenia’s parliament that his government intended to apply for EU membership “in the near future.”

The EU has already agreed to suspend import duties on a range of Armenian products for two years to support the country’s economy, after Russia imposed trade restrictions.

European officials have implied that Russia’s measures are in response to Yerevan developing closer relations with the bloc.
