Azerbaijan’s President Ilham Aliyev warned against interference from outside actors in remarks at the 8th Congress of the New Azerbaijan Party in Baku on Friday 2 October.
Speaking at the Heydar Aliyev Center, Aliyev said that Azerbaijan answers every blow against it with several more and rejected any need for outside patronage.
“For one blow, we may return two, five or ten blows — so that everyone knows their place, stays out of our affairs, does not stick their nose into our way of life, and does not tell us what to do,” he said.
Aliyev also criticised the co-chairs of the now dissolved OSCE Minsk Group for their record during the 44-day War in 2020.
“The co-chairs of the Minsk Group were against us. Today they are among the leading powers in the world.
“Look at whom we fought against. They stood behind Armenia, and they still do today — each in their own way,” he said.
The OSCE Minsk Group was formed in 1992 to encourage a negotiated resolution to the former Garabagh conflict
It was permanently co-chaired by three countries: France, Russia and the U.S. before its dissolution in September 2025, on the request of Azerbaijan and Armenia.
He added that the main objective of the Minsk Group was to “freeze” the former conflict, rather than to assist in restoring Azerbaijan’s territorial integrity.
Aliyev went on to affirm the importance of Azerbaijan’s self-sufficiency, noting that the country had been left alone when it had a million refugees and internally displaced people following the First Garabagh War in the 1990s.
“This was a humanitarian catastrophe, and we were left entirely on our own. No one was helping us; no one helped us during the war in the 1990s, nor did anyone help us after the war.
“We left these hardships behind single-handedly, and today we stand firmly on our feet. The will of the Azerbaijani people, their faith in the National Leader, and his political course were precisely what led to all these successful steps,” he said.
