Georgia and Azerbaijan have launched a digital system for issuing and exchanging permits for international road freight transport. Georgian carriers can now use electronic permits in Azerbaijan, as they already do in Türkiye.
Georgia and Azerbaijan have introduced a digital system that enables permit documents for cross-border road freight transport to be issued and exchanged electronically, replacing paper-based processes between the two countries.
Bakur Mikadze, Director of the Land Transport Agency at Georgia's Ministry of Economy and Sustainable Development, said the new system simplifies administrative procedures, speeds up and secures data exchange, and reduces paperwork. He added that it makes the management of international freight transport more modern, transparent and efficient.
According to Mikadze, issuing and verifying permits electronically is significantly faster than the paper-based process and should improve the overall efficiency of freight operations between the two countries.
The system is based on bilateral cooperation, with Georgia and Azerbaijan using a shared electronic platform to issue, exchange and manage permit documents.
Following negotiations between the two countries, 1,000 electronic permit forms have been exchanged for each permit type. A full transition to digital permits is planned for 2027.
The move is expected to make cross-border transport operations simpler and faster for freight companies operating between Georgia and Azerbaijan. It also supports Georgia's ambition to strengthen its position as a regional transit hub, connecting freight routes across the wider region.
