President Ilham Aliyev has approved an agreement between the governments of Azerbaijan and Georgia on the supply of natural gas to Georgia, marking another step in energy cooperation between the two neighbouring countries.

According to a presidential decree, the agreement was formally approved following its signing in Baku on 18 May 2026.

Under the decree, Azerbaijan's Ministry of Economy has been tasked with overseeing the implementation of the agreement once it enters into force.

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs will be responsible for notifying the Georgian government that Azerbaijan has completed all domestic procedures required for the agreement to enter into force.

Strategic energy partnership

The agreement is expected to further strengthen strategic energy ties between Baku and Tbilisi, with Azerbaijan remaining one of Georgia's key suppliers of natural gas.

Energy cooperation has long been a cornerstone of relations between the two countries, which also collaborate on major regional energy and transport projects linking the South Caucasus with European markets.

The approval comes as Azerbaijan continues to play a significant role in regional energy security, supplying natural gas to neighbouring countries and international partners through a network of pipelines spanning the South Caucasus.
