Azerbaijani citizens repatriated after deadly Sea of Azov attack

Azerbaijan's Foreign Ministry says 19 citizens have been repatriated following a deadly drone attack on two cargo ships in the Sea of Azov on 5 June.

According to the latest statement, 19 Azerbaijani citizens who were aboard the vessels targeted in the attack were expected to arrive home around 9 June. Meanwhile, the bodies of two more citizens have been recovered. In total, four Azerbaijanis were killed in the attacks.

Russia and Ukraine trade accusations

Russia’s Foreign Ministry said the ships Natra and Zircon were travelling from Türkiye to Rostov-on-Don when they were struck by Ukrainian drones, describing the attack as targeting civilian infrastructure. The claims could not be independently verified.

Earlier, Ukraine said it had carried out drone strikes against vessels in the ports of Mariupol and Berdyansk and nearby coastal waters, alleging they were involved in transporting military supplies, fuel and grain.

Ukraine did not immediately comment on Azerbaijan’s report of casualties among Azerbaijani crew members.

Russia also expressed condolences and said it is cooperating with Azerbaijani authorities in the aftermath of the incident.
