Azerbaijan’s President Ilham Aliyev met Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan and European leaders in Copenhagen on Thursday, discussing the peace process, energy cooperation and transport links.
President Ilham Aliyev held talks with Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan on the sidelines of the 7th European Political Community summit in Copenhagen on Thursday 2nd October.
The two leaders underlined the significance of agreements reached at the Washington Peace Summit, hosted by U.S. President Donald Trump, and reaffirmed their readiness to strengthen peace between the two countries.
They also discussed regional transport projects, including ongoing infrastructure work in Azerbaijan and the TRIPP initiative in Armenia.
Both sides welcomed the decision to dissolve the OSCE Minsk process, saying it no longer reflected the current realities, and agreed on the need for further confidence-building measures and continued dialogue.
President Aliyev later met Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni. The two leaders highlighted the growth of ties within a strategic partnership framework, recalling Italian President Sergio Mattarella’s recent visit to Baku and the opening of the Italy-Azerbaijan University’s first teaching facilities.
Energy cooperation was emphasised, with Azerbaijan reaffirming its role in contributing to Italy’s energy security.
In a separate meeting with European Council President António Costa and European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen, Aliyev received congratulations on progress in the peace agenda with Armenia.
The EU leaders pledged continued support for peace efforts and underlined the importance of developing regional transport connections.
Talks also focused on energy security, with Aliyev noting that ten European countries, including eight EU members, are now importing Azerbaijani gas.
He also stressed Azerbaijan’s role in the Middle Corridor trade route, with growing freight volumes from Central Asia crossing through the country.
The collective-defence agreement between Türkiye, Saudi Arabia and Pakistan signals that regional powers no longer want to rely solely on external security guarantees. Whether it becomes a stabilising deterrent or another axis of rivalry remains unresolved.
Shipping through the Strait of Hormuz has slowed, according to the latest data, as uncertainty over the waterway’s reopening kept most shipowners away. Six commodity vessels crossed the strait on Tuesday, down from nine the day before and below the 10-day daily average of 11.
Iran has said the Strait of Hormuz will remain closed until the U.S. fulfils the terms of an interim deal, including lifting the maritime blockade and sanctions and releasing Iran’s frozen assets.
Shipping traffic through the Strait of Hormuz remains limited on Thursday, with no increase in vessel crossings as U.S.-Iran talks to resolve the conflict remained stalled. Nine commodity vessels transited the key waterway on Wednesday, unchanged from the previous day, according to Kpler data.
