Iran, Armenia to hold high-level talks on 'Trump Route'

IRNA

Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi announced that he will hold phone conversations today with his Armenian counterpart, Ararat Mirzoyan, and Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan to discuss the outcomes of the recent peace summit between Armenia and Azerbaijan, including “Trump Route” agreement.

Additionally, Armenia’s Deputy Foreign Minister is scheduled to visit Tehran on Tuesday.

Commenting on the agreements reached between Armenia and Azerbaijan in Washington on August 8, Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi stated: “We are in continuous consultations with both parties. Our position on the Zangezur [corridor] and related issues is absolutely clear. We welcome any peace agreement between Armenia and Azerbaijan and have previously expressed our readiness to cooperate and support the peace process between the two countries.”

He added that Tehran supported the full sovereignty and territorial integrity of all countries and rejected any changes to internationally recognized borders.

"The joint statement by Armenia and Azerbaijan reflects these same principles: respect for sovereignty, respect for territorial integrity, and opposition to border changes. These are fully aligned with the stance of the Islamic Republic of Iran,” Araghchi stated.

At the same time, the Foreign Ministry of the Islamic Republic expressed "concern over the negative consequences of any form of foreign intervention, especially near its shared borders, that could undermine the security and lasting stability of the region."

The two South Caucasus countries signed agreements with each other and with the United States to reopen key transportation routes. The deal includes the creation of a major transit corridor linking Azerbaijan to its exclave of Nakhchivan, with the United States granted development rights.

The connectivity project implemented in the territory of the Republic of Armenia is to be named the "Trump Route for International Peace and Prosperity."

Donald Trump said that naming the route after him was “a great honour for me”, but “I didn’t ask for this”. A senior administration official, on a call before the event with reporters, said it was the Armenians who suggested the name.

"We are closely monitoring developments. So far, our principled positions have been respected, but the possible involvement of an American company is a matter of concern, and we will maintain ongoing consultations on this issue,” said Iranian Foreign Minister.

Ministry's statement released on 9th August said that "Iran remains ready to continue constructive cooperation based on mutual interests with both the Republic of Azerbaijan and the Republic of Armenia to preserve peace, stability, and economic development in the region through bilateral and regional initiatives, including the 3+3 mechanism."
