Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan announced on Wednesday that Türkiye is prepared to assist in any way possible to facilitate a lasting ceasefire in Gaza.
Speaking to members of his ruling AK Party in parliament, Erdogan expressed satisfaction with the recent ceasefire agreement in Lebanon, while stressing that a similar resolution in Gaza is essential for regional stability.
Erdogan, who has been a vocal critic of Israel’s military actions in Gaza and Lebanon, confirmed that Türkiye has previously engaged with Hamas, the Palestinian militant group, to discuss potential truce strategies. In addition, Erdogan’s statement reflects Türkiye's willingness to play an active role in negotiations for peace, as part of a broader international effort.
On Tuesday, U.S. President Joe Biden also highlighted the importance of a ceasefire in Gaza, pledging that the United States would continue to push for a resolution alongside Türkiye, Egypt, Qatar, Israel, and others. Responding to Biden’s remarks, a Turkish official said that whilst the ceasefire in Lebanon is a positive step, a resolution in Gaza is crucial to ensure lasting regional stability.
“We are ready to help achieve a permanent ceasefire and a lasting solution in Gaza,” the official added. Despite ongoing tensions and harsh rhetoric between Ankara and Tel Aviv since the start of the Gaza conflict, Türkiye has maintained diplomatic relations with Israel, although it does not designate Hamas as a terrorist organisation and frequently hosts senior members of the group.
