A magnitude 5.6 earthquake struck Afghanistan’s Hindu Kush region on Wednesday, according to the European-Mediterranean Seismological Centre (EMSC), with tremors felt in nearby areas.
The quake occurred at a depth of 121 kilometers (75 miles), with its epicentre located approximately 164 kilometers east of Baghlan, a city home to around 108,000 residents.
While there were no immediate reports of casualties or significant damage, the region is known for its seismic activity due to the complex tectonic interactions between the Indian and Eurasian plates.
Authorities are monitoring the situation, and residents in surrounding provinces reported feeling the tremors. Emergency teams have been alerted as a precautionary measure.
The Hindu Kush area frequently experiences moderate to strong earthquakes, and local officials continue to urge preparedness in vulnerable communities.
