A gunman opened fire near a high school in western Türkiye on Tuesday morning, injuring 11 people before being detained by police, according to local authorities.
The shooting took place at around 7.59 am local time near the İnci Üzmez Vocational and Technical Anatolian High School in Turgutlu, in Manisa province, the governor’s office said.
Local media reported that students were among those wounded, with two reportedly in critical condition. Police, medical teams and emergency responders were sent to the scene as authorities tightened security around the school.
The governor’s office said police had detained the suspected attacker and launched an investigation. The motive was not immediately known.
The office said it had received a report of gunfire “in the vicinity of the İnci Üzmez Vocational and Technical Anatolian High School” at 07:59.
Images and video circulating online appeared to show a young man carrying what looked like a rifle as he walked along a street near the school. In another clip, a man could be seen running in the area.
Separate footage from outside the school showed police restraining a man in a white shirt before taking him away, while people gathered behind the school fence recorded the scene on their phones.
Vice President Cevdet Yılmaz said Interior Minister Mustafa Çiftçi and Education Minister Yusuf Tekin were travelling to the site of the incident in Manisa.
The incident comes only months after two deadly school shootings in Türkiye in April triggered public concern and renewed calls for stronger security measures.
Authorities subsequently introduced additional measures for the 2026-27 academic year, including tighter controls on firearms.
Türkiye had not previously experienced a long-running pattern of school shootings, making the recent incidents particularly sensitive.
The investigation into Tuesday’s shooting remains ongoing, with authorities expected to establish how the suspect obtained the weapon and what led to the attack.
